Hygiene of the Portuguese Water Dog
The Portuguese Water Dog’s hair should be brushed regularly. Since this breed’s hair grows slowly, the clipping is not as frequent as other breeds. These dogs shedding is minimal.
The ears should be cleaned after swimming or diving to prevent inflammation. We advise you to remove the hairs inside the ears – don’t be alarmed, as it’s not painful for them – and it should be done since a young age, so they are accustomed to it. This way you can help prevent inflammatory problems.
They can (and should!) take a bath once in a while, with canine shampoo. If you wish, use a softener as well, it will make the hair quite silky and smooth.
We also advise you to accustom them to teeth brushing, once a week. Toothpaste for dogs can be found in any pet shop.
This will help avoid extremely unpleasant dental problems.
